Why Fear Failure in Life?
By D Nyambu
As a normal human being it is usual to fear failure. Fear is an emotion that exists for a number of reasons. One reason that fear exists is to help save lives. Really? You may ask, how?
One can avoid putting their hand on a burning flame for fear of being burnt! Yeah, that’s positive fear. There are other instances where fear works in a positive way, like avoiding a lonely dark alley for fear of being attacked or avoiding jumping off a high staircase for fear of getting hurt.
But then, there is this other fear that may be said to be negative fear. Fear of speaking out when you see an injustice taking place, either towards yourself or to another person. Fear of starting a business yet you have a good business idea, or maybe even you did start this great business but it failed miserably! So now you are afraid to try anything else again at all, after all, once beaten twice shy! That’s kind of understandable, but then again, do you know how many times Albert Einstein failed while creating the light bulb? What could have happened if he had given up along the way? How many times does a baby, while learning to walk, fall? If that baby gave up trying, would they walk at all?
We all fail at one time or another, but we need not stay down. We should learn to embrace failure and draw lessons from it. That’s the only way we will move forward. Learning from our past mistakes helps propel us forward to attain success. Successful people usually turn mistakes into stepping stones that lead upwards towards success. They move forward by evaluating where they went wrong, learning from the experience by avoiding repeat past mistakes, forgetting the past and moving forward towards the goal ahead.
Believe me, there are lessons to learn from every bad experience, one only need look carefully to find them. As Dave Anderson once said, ‘To succeed, you have to be open to problems. You have to be open to failure. And as you go up the ladder, you gain the right to get more problems.’ And maybe even the right to get more failures…if I may add.
We need to be bold and be ready to learn from every experience that comes our way. That is the only way we will be able to move forward and up the ladder of success in life.
