Over sixty percent of the human brain consists of a jelly-like substance often referred to as soft tofu or gelatin. The brain is essentially plastic and is constantly re-wiring itself hence the reason why it never loses its ability to learn new things and to change in structure.
They say forgetting is good for your brain as deleting unnecessary information enables your nervous system preserve its plasticity. No wonder health experts say forgetting past hurts is beneficial to you and to your health!
Sometimes in life certain events take place that make us feel really bad. These unpleasant experiences are painful to remember and much as we are better off not recalling them, they often invade our subconscious minds again and again reminding us of the incident. A broken relationship, a failed business or a harsh word spoken in childhood, are just a few examples of past hurts best forgotten. There is no need to brood, complain and blame the other party or make life difficult for people around you in an attempt to try and forget the incidence! 1. First and foremost, you need to accept that this event actually happened. This is a fact that you have to live with and need to realize that it is now all in the past.
2. Consider writing down the event as you recall it in your personal journal.
3. Sit down calmly and quietly reflect upon what you have written down. Think deeply and in retrospect on any worthwhile lesson that you could extract from the incident. Ask yourself; ‘Where did I go wrong?’, ‘What worked well?’, ‘What did not work?’, ‘What could I have done better given another chance?’ Write these thoughts down.
4. Resolve to use your negative life experiences in a positive and creative way by helping other people around you. Consider giving advice or mentorship so that those around you do not go through what you went through.
5. Remember bad experiences much as they are unpleasant; help you become a better person.
Practicing the above skills could help you become a positive and creative thinker thus enabling you to ultimately grow both socially and economically!
Every bad memory has a silver lining to it and being on the look-out for that silver lining is one way of forgetting the bad experience. It is not possible to change what happened in the past but one can change the present and subsequently the future by turning the negative past into a positive outcome.
Remember in life you have no control over what happens to you but you can control your reaction and attitude toward what happened to you.
