Is good character tied to success in life?
Does a person’s character determine success in life? This is a question that was posed to a group of young learners who were still groping with their identity. Would you admire a wrong doer? Is another similar question posed to them.
Most certainly not! Wrong doers are usually shunned by society and every child warned not to turn up like so and so. Now if you are shunned down by your community, that’s an outward nail on your head that you are certainly not a success in life. In every society, there are rules and norms; dos and don’ts; a way of life. Who then is a successful person?
A successful person is one who accomplishes that which he set out to do. Wait…then is a wrong doer who succeeds in accomplishing his wrong doing a successful person? But then again, a successful person is one who is admired by others for his or her accomplishments. So, NO, in such a case, a wrong doer cannot be termed as a successful person because people shun his wrong doing. A successful person does not break the laws of the land or society in which he lives in. Neither does he take pleasure in harming people around him. So he does have character…aye! Yaah! A successful person must have some good character that drives him towards the accomplishment of his or her goals that will bring admiration, envy and happiness to those around him.
Back to my question…does good character determine success in life? What is good character? A person with character is a person who knows the difference between right and wrong and is ready to be truthful about it. This then is someone who has self-discipline, good moral values that he is ready to defend at all costs, is bold and courageous, has charisma that inspires others and communicates and gets along well with people around him. Admirable, isn’t it? These are the same virtues that beckon success to come along and follow anyone who bears these characteristics in his life!
Determine to be a success in life by attaining habits that build your good character and you will surely make it!
