The importance of Life Skills Training cannot be over emphasised. It is in some way connected to the national stability of a nation. One may ask But How?
When a student population, group of youth or a community is taken through life skills training, they are also equipped with the know-how of setting personal values. Personal values according to the business dictionary are an individual’s ‘code of ethics’ or ‘personal belief systems’. Thus positive values have the most positive impact in an individual’s life as well as in the national development of a nation in the long run.
Some of the benefits of a nation whose people have positive moral values include the fact that cases of corruption, violence, street riots and all sorts of criminal activities will be a thing of the past. This is because such a people have positive personal conviction that engaging in such criminal activities is wrong and thus will not join a crowd for the sake of joining it. The positive personal conviction also has something to do with personal image. If one regards himself or herself highly, they are bound not to involve themselves with activities that will mar this good image.
So does this mean that those who take part in criminal acts have a low self-esteem? To a certain extent, yes, they do. A person will usually engage in un-becoming behaviour for two reasons; when he knows for sure he has nothing to lose or when he knows at the end of it all he will receive some reward in engaging in the bad behaviour. What this really means is that his or her mind-set has been corrupted to a certain percentage.
