The NurSYP Kenya Skills4life Training Program kicked off in September 2014 where well wishers, neighbors and friends of NurSYP Kenya Volunteers joined in the Crowd Funding Campaign. The thirty percent of the required budget was raised and project plans started before the end of the year.
Come January, the project schedule was on course as plans for content development were made. Several working committee meetings were held and a number of project activities such as design and preparation of the posters, advertising cards and banner, identification of and booking of the training venue, advertising in the media as well as sourcing for training facilitators was done.
Finally, the big day came. We opened the training sessions on 21st April, at 9am with registration of participants and commenced with a session on self identity. Here, participants were encouraged to identify with self, set their goals and develop personal vision and mission. Mr. Nobby Nyata, of Hazel Consultants, successfully took us through this session. The sessions that followed, Nobby took participants through leadership topics such as what a leader is not, integrity, qualities of a good leader.
Training of Trainers sessions with Mr. Hasea of Kenya Technical Teachers Training College (KTTC) then followed. He very ably took participants through sessions in Topic identification, Topic Sequencing, Lesson development and planning as well as practical by some of the participants pointing out best teaching practices for learners.
We finally had the Entrepreneurship sessions with Mr. Wachira. He very cleverly enabled participants to visualize opportunities at their disposal, encouraging them to identify areas of their gifting and talents and how they could maximize this in the business arena. This session had a lot of group work which gave participants a realistic approach to entrepreneurship. They also learnt the types of businesses that they could open, the legal aspects of businesses as well as basic financial management of businesses.
The training took place at Cardinal Otunga Plaza from 21st to 24th April, from 8am to 4pm. Training materials, Tea and lunch was provided.
The training sessions were interactive and participatory and were concluded with the issuing of certificates to all sponsored participants.
