The Sudan Pyramids & The Aswan Dam Effect
The Sudan Pyramids & The Aswan Dam Effect By D Nyambu Most people are familiar with the famous pyramids in Egypt. So it surprises almost everyone when mention is made of the existence of numerous pyramids in the northern Sudan desert of Meroe. These pyramids are not only found in the Sudanese city of Meroe alone, but also in El Kurru, Gebel Barkal and Nuri cities. There exist about 200 strong pyramids in Meroe alone. These pyramids are ancient and some of them date back over 4,000 years back. Meroe was a capital city for the ancient Kingdom of Kush which was ruled by Nubian Kings. Though smaller, these Nubian Pyramids are just as impressive as the Egyptian ones and were also built as tombs for kings and queens of Nuri, Meroe and El Kurru. The Kush Kingdom was very powerful and covered a vast area of the Nile Delta as far south as Khartoum. It represented the most prosperous period of Nubian civilization strongly being influenced the pharaonic Egyptian culture, economy and military. Thus the history of Nubia is linked closely to ancient Egypt and the regions of Sudan, Egypt and Nubia regarded as the cradle of civilization. InRead More…
Three Endangered Species in Africa
Three Endangered Species in Africa By D Nyambu An endangered species is an organism or animal that is threatened by extinction. An animal becomes extinct when it disappears from the face of the earth. A good example of an extinct animal is the Dinosaur. Species become endangered for two reasons; Loss of Habitat and Loss of Genetic Variation. A loss of habitat may occur due to natural causes or through human activity. A habitat is a place where animals or organisms find food and rise their young ones who will hopefully find space to grow, spread and live their lives. Human beings have taken up a lot of space on planet earth as their population keeps growing. They clear vegetation and forests for construction of houses for their families and for agriculture as well as for industrial development. They draw water from rivers for crop irrigation and pollute the natural landscapes with pesticides and chemicals from industrial wastes. This results in loss of habitat for the mammals or organisms thus causing their extinction as they have nowhere to live and raise their young ones. Loss of Genetic Variation is a variety found within a species. It allows for species toRead More…
Man and Environmental Degradation
MAN AND ENVORONMENTAL DEGRADATION By D Nyambu Ever since Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, man has been mandated to subdue the earth and have dominion over the fish of the sea, birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth. He was also told to eat from every herb bearing seed on the face of the earth, and every tree which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed. In other words, mankind was given authority over the earth to take care of it and to replenish it. Over 6000 years later, we see that mankind has not done a very good job in some areas of this mandate. Okay, he has done well in re-stocking human kind, we are now over 7billion people on the face of the earth, but on the part of controlling the earth he has somewhat failed despite huge technological advancements. This is not to say that all is lost…we as mankind can still salvage what is left of the earth in an attempt to recoup what has been lost. The earth consists of land, water masses and air. This is basically what we call the environment.Read More…

Power of Words in Life
The Power of Words in Life By D Nyambu The impact of words on living beings cannot be underestimated. Children learn from a tender age to speak the language of their parents. The learning process both at home and in school is usually via words whether written or verbal. There is no doubt; the spoken word is powerful. This is evident through the countless times a parent repeats a corrective action to their child or a teacher to a student until they get it right. But how do the words have an effect on a person? Kind words sooth the being and unkind words injure the heart causing turmoil and disharmony. There is a connection, therefore, between the spoken word and our hearts. Words are like seeds and our hearts like the garden soil. There are different types of soils in which people may plant in. There is good soil and bad soil. Good soil produces a good harvest while bad soil produces a poor crop. One can improve on the crop they want to harvest by improving the soil by adding the right nutrients for plant growth. Remember also that whatever seed you plant in the garden is whatRead More…

Why Fear Failure In Life?
Why Fear Failure in Life? By D Nyambu As a normal human being it is usual to fear failure. Fear is an emotion that exists for a number of reasons. One reason that fear exists is to help save lives. Really? You may ask, how? One can avoid putting their hand on a burning flame for fear of being burnt! Yeah, that’s positive fear. There are other instances where fear works in a positive way, like avoiding a lonely dark alley for fear of being attacked or avoiding jumping off a high staircase for fear of getting hurt. But then, there is this other fear that may be said to be negative fear. Fear of speaking out when you see an injustice taking place, either towards yourself or to another person. Fear of starting a business yet you have a good business idea, or maybe even you did start this great business but it failed miserably! So now you are afraid to try anything else again at all, after all, once beaten twice shy! That’s kind of understandable, but then again, do you know how many times Albert Einstein failed while creating the light bulb? What could have happened ifRead More…
How a Positive Attitude Draws Success in Life
How a Positive Attitude Draws Success in Life By D Nyambu Can a positive attitude really draw success to oneself in life? This is a question that I have always sought an answer for time and time again. How can mere positive attitude draw success to a person yet there are no visible channels of connections that one can see and point out that show a correlation? So I sought out answers and John Maxwell in his book, Failing Forward, kind of helped me understand just how this concept works. He says that any problem has a solution and that what you cannot change is a fact of life. A fact of life must therefore be accepted since one cannot change it. There are things in life that you may not have control over and cannot change. For instance, a storm that brings down your business, tribal clashes that displace your family or even someone stepping hard on your foot as you board public transport. One cannot control calamity that comes your way but you can control your reaction towards the calamity. The best thing to do is to accept the things you cannot change and see what best canRead More…
Emotional Intelligence & Entrepreneurship
Emotional Intelligence & Entrepreneurship Does Emotional Intelligence have a part to play in Entrepreneurship? As human beings, we daily go through emotions in our lives. The ability to experience emotional feelings such as pain, anger, happiness, joy is healthy and living without them would spell disastrous to the human race. The absence of feelings would mean that a person could place their hand in a burning flame and get burnt to death due to lack of feeling pain. But when they experience the pain, they will immediately withdraw their hand from the flame. Anger, fear, pain, sadness are feelings that tell us that all is not well within or around us. We need to recognize these emotions and learn how to control them in order to avoid them hurting ourselves and the people around us. So what is Emotional Intelligence? Emotional Intelligence could be described as the ability of a person to handle life’s challenges in a sound and mature way especially those that involve relations with people around them. How does entrepreneurship and emotional intelligence relate? Well, an entrepreneur interacts with people almost 80% of his life time as he or she goes about their business hence the needRead More…
Growth in Entrepreneurship Requires Patience
Growth in Entrepreneurship Requires Patience By Deborah Nyambu Does growth in entrepreneurship really require patience in today’s modern world? We are living in a fast world whereby you only need press a button and you got what you wanted. Obtaining goods and services in today’s world has become so easy that it has become difficult to imagine that one has to wait for long hours to obtain something. This may be dangerous for upcoming generations as it may not be mentally sound and goes against the laws of nature. If we look all around us, anything that has some form of growth be it human, animal or plant life, requires some time for it to mature. A seed planted today will not sprout tomorrow same case happens to an animal’s offspring, it takes some time, maybe hours before it can stand strong on its four legs. The human baby is totally helpless at birth and requires everything done for it as it grows and moves from total dependence to independence. The independence however does not happen overnight; it requires many years of moving from one step of growth to another like a staircase leading upwards finally towards total independence. Today’sRead More…

Are Entrepreneurship skills acquired at birth or learned in life?
Are Entrepreneurship skills acquired at birth or learned in life? Good question …are entrepreneurship skills acquired at birth or learned in life? Don’t you just wonder how some people skillfully sail through to success in their business ventures while others have to sweat, agonize and struggle to go through the maze of challenges that life throws in their path to success? Is there something different that the first group does that enables them achieve success faster than the second group? Were they perhaps born with natural entrepreneurship skills? What are entrepreneurship skills? These are skills that enable one to have better business acumen in their business ventures. Who is an entrepreneur then? An Entrepreneur may be said to be a leader who sees a vision through his day dreams and goes out to make those dreams a reality. Thus, an entrepreneur is a very creative and innovative being who looks out for opportunities and seizes them every time they come his way…especially so if they are in line with his dreams. He is therefore able to create wealth by making a profit through using his vision or dream and the chance that comes his way. Is that all one needsRead More…
Is good character tied to success in life?
Is good character tied to success in life? Does a person’s character determine success in life? This is a question that was posed to a group of young learners who were still groping with their identity. Would you admire a wrong doer? Is another similar question posed to them. Most certainly not! Wrong doers are usually shunned by society and every child warned not to turn up like so and so. Now if you are shunned down by your community, that’s an outward nail on your head that you are certainly not a success in life. In every society, there are rules and norms; dos and don’ts; a way of life. Who then is a successful person? A successful person is one who accomplishes that which he set out to do. Wait…then is a wrong doer who succeeds in accomplishing his wrong doing a successful person? But then again, a successful person is one who is admired by others for his or her accomplishments. So, NO, in such a case, a wrong doer cannot be termed as a successful person because people shun his wrong doing. A successful person does not break the laws of the land or society inRead More…

A Juvenile Prison Experience
Juvenile Prison Experience By D Nyambu In early March, 2013, I volunteered to speak to a group of Juveniles who were in remand prison. I wanted to not only see their sleeping quarters but also to try and understand how they felt being in prison thus get to empathize with the teachers who take them through life skills lessons. I was also hoping to understand the situation that the Juveniles found themselves in. The prison we were to visit was for young juvenile boys between the ages 13 to 17 years. These are young children who had committed offences such as attempted murder, robbery with violence, attempted rape to name but a few. A day before going to visit with the prisoners, my friend Janette began narrating to me of how the male prisoners stare at women visitors and that I should be very careful with what I wore when going to the prison quarters. ‘Don’t wear any low necked blouses and tight outfits’ she advised. I put up a brave face, little did she know, I was melting in the inside, almost changing my mind about making the visit. What if I got attacked, what would I tell peopleRead More…

Your Goals in Life
YOUR GOALS IN LIFE Imagine waking up one morning, opening the door of your house and walking. You walk and walk and walk… Will anything much be accomplished by this act? No. Why? For the simple reason that you are doing nothing but walking. Unless one is in some form of exercising, this aimless walking will yield nothing much. This same case applies in our lives. We don’t just live life, but we should make an effort to live a life that has direction or some form of strategy. Failure to do this will lead to a life that yields nothing much. It is vital that before you touch the handles of the door to your house you have an idea of where you want to go, and what you want to do as you venture out. This may be known to some as a goal or purpose in life. So what is a goal? A goal is a vision, a dream, a task or objective that someone wants to achieve in the coming future. A goal gives one purpose and direction in their lives as they work towards achieving it. So how does one set goals? One must firstRead More…
What is Your Image in Life?
YOUR IMAGE IN LIFE By Deborah Nyambu Look into a mirror. What do you see? I know some of you will say; I see myself, some will say I see a reflection of myself yet some will say I see a determined person or a failure. Maybe I should phrase that question differently. What do you really want to see in the mirror? Of course you want to see a beautiful or handsome face, one filled with hope and confidence for the future. I was teaching a group of youth through my volunteer organisation and I posed this question to them. Of course I made them look through a mirror and waited for the answers. I then went on to tell them that what they saw in the mirror was their own image. What is an image? It is a reflection, a picture, a copy or a likeness of something to its original or real thing. The fact that the Bible tells us that we are made in God’s image means we are a likeness to our creator. In essence, we look somewhat like God. And being the creator of the universe, God is great and full of wisdom. HeRead More…
Self Control for Life
SELF CONTROL FOR LIFE Self-Control is one of the most important virtues in the life of an individual. It encompasses every area pertaining to an individual’s livelihood from sunrise to sunset. If a person lucks self-control in his life, he may be termed as a no-body in some quarters as self-control determines your character. What is self-control? It is the ability to control one’s action. It is often said that an individual’s action first starts in the mind; you think it, feel it then act it. So if you think to control your mind to a certain direction, then you will act in that direction. Somehow your feelings will be forced to move in that direction hence influencing your actions. Your behaviour defines you. If you have positive behaviours that draw people towards you then you have a good character. On the other hand if your behaviour is such that it drives people away from you, then it means you are not very likeable and your behaviour is negative in nature. But where does this negative behaviour and actions come from? A writer once said that how you perceive yourself determines your actions by what you reflect from your innermostRead More…

Life Skills Training and Moral Values
The importance of Life Skills Training cannot be over emphasised. It is in some way connected to the national stability of a nation. One may ask But How? When a student population, group of youth or a community is taken through life skills training, they are also equipped with the know-how of setting personal values. Personal values according to the business dictionary are an individual’s ‘code of ethics’ or ‘personal belief systems’. Thus positive values have the most positive impact in an individual’s life as well as in the national development of a nation in the long run. Some of the benefits of a nation whose people have positive moral values include the fact that cases of corruption, violence, street riots and all sorts of criminal activities will be a thing of the past. This is because such a people have positive personal conviction that engaging in such criminal activities is wrong and thus will not join a crowd for the sake of joining it. The positive personal conviction also has something to do with personal image. If one regards himself or herself highly, they are bound not to involve themselves with activities that will mar this good image. SoRead More…
